Kentucky Vs Youngstown State Preview & Info

After an offseason filled with change, optimism and plenty of questions, Kentucky football finally gets to answer some of them on the field.

The Wildcats open the 2026 season Saturday afternoon against Youngstown State at Kroger Field, marking the official beginning of the Will Stein era at Kentucky.

On paper, this is obviously a game Kentucky should win. The Wildcats are an SEC team playing at home against an FCS opponent. But anyone expecting Youngstown State to simply show up, collect a paycheck and head back to Ohio hasn't been paying attention.

The Penguins are good. More importantly, they have a quarterback capable of making life uncomfortable for Kentucky if the Wildcats aren't ready to play.

A New Era Begins in Lexington

There may not be another Kentucky season opener in recent memory carrying quite this much curiosity.

Will Stein takes over a program looking for a fresh start, and Saturday will give Big Blue Nation its first real look at what Kentucky football will become under its new head coach.

Stein built his reputation around offense, tempo, quarterback development and putting playmakers in favorable situations. Kentucky fans have spent the offseason hearing about what the new system could look like. Now they finally get to see it against an actual opponent.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey, the Notre Dame transfer, is expected to get the first opportunity to direct Stein's offense. Around him, Kentucky has assembled an intriguing collection of veterans, transfers and young talent.

The offensive line could become one of the strengths of the team. Veteran center Coleton Price gives Kentucky experience in the middle, while Tennessee transfer Lance Heard provides a massive presence at tackle. Tight end Willie Rodriguez also enters the season with considerable expectations.

Saturday isn't just about winning. It's about getting an early indication that Kentucky's offense has taken the step forward fans have been waiting to see.

Don't Overlook Youngstown State

Youngstown State enters Lexington with something Kentucky doesn't have yet: a game under its belt.

The Penguins opened their season Thursday night with an impressive 43-10 victory over Mercyhurst. They rolled up 484 yards of offense, rushed for 252 yards and scored on each of their first five possessions.

Youngstown State also enters the season ranked No. 9 in the preseason AFCA FCS Coaches Poll after going 8-5 last year.

Kentucky should have significant advantages in size, speed and depth. But Youngstown State has enough experience and offensive firepower to make things interesting if Kentucky gives the Penguins opportunities.

The Biggest Challenge: Beau Brungard

If Kentucky fans remember only one Youngstown State player's name before Saturday, it should be Beau Brungard.

Brungard won the 2025 Walter Payton Award, given annually to the top offensive player in FCS football, after producing one of the most impressive dual-threat seasons in the country.

Last season he accounted for more than 4,700 yards of total offense, throwing for 3,234 yards while rushing for another 1,468. He accounted for an incredible 53 touchdowns between passing and rushing.

And apparently he hasn't slowed down.

Against Mercyhurst in the opener, Brungard completed 20 of 29 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 119 yards and two more scores.

That makes him an excellent opening test for Kentucky defensive coordinator Jay Bateman.

Brungard's ability to extend plays with his legs means Kentucky's pass rush can't simply fly up the field. The Wildcats will need to maintain rush lanes, tackle well in space and force Youngstown State into long-yardage situations.

If Kentucky lets Brungard escape the pocket repeatedly, the Penguins are capable of extending drives and eating up the clock.

What Kentucky Fans Should Be Watching

1. What does Will Stein's offense actually look like?

This is the obvious one.

How fast does Kentucky play? How often does Minchey push the ball downfield? How creative is the running game? How heavily are the tight ends involved? How much motion and misdirection do we see?

Kentucky shouldn't need to empty the playbook with Alabama coming to town the following week, but fans should still get their first meaningful glimpse of Stein's offensive identity.

2. How comfortable does Kenny Minchey look?

The best-case scenario for Kentucky is a boringly efficient afternoon from its new quarterback.

Move the chains. Protect the football. Hit the open receiver. Make a few explosive plays. Get comfortable operating the offense.

The Wildcats don't need Minchey to be Superman against Youngstown State. They need him to look confident, decisive and in command.

3. Can Kentucky control the line of scrimmage?

This is where the talent difference should become obvious.

If Kentucky's offensive line is going to be a strength this season, the Wildcats should be able to establish the running game and keep Minchey's jersey relatively clean.

Defensively, Kentucky needs to make Youngstown State earn everything. The Penguins rushed for 252 yards in their opener, so this is a legitimate early test for the Wildcats' front seven.

4. Does Kentucky play clean football?

Season openers can get sloppy. New coaching staffs make that even more likely.

Penalties, turnovers, missed assignments and special-teams mistakes are probably Youngstown State's best path toward keeping this game competitive into the second half.

Kentucky doesn't need to be perfect. It does need to avoid giving the Penguins short fields and extra possessions.

5. Can Kentucky build a lead and use its depth?

With Alabama waiting next week, the ideal script would have Kentucky comfortably ahead by the second half.

That would allow Stein and his staff to rotate players, get young Wildcats meaningful snaps and avoid unnecessarily wearing down key starters.

It would also give Kentucky's second-team players valuable game experience before the schedule becomes dramatically more difficult.

Three Keys to a Kentucky Victory

History Favors the Wildcats

Kentucky and Youngstown State have met only once before.

That came in Lexington during the 2022 season, when the Wildcats were ranked in the Top 10 nationally. Kentucky's defense dominated the afternoon, holding Youngstown State to just 192 total yards in a 31-0 Kentucky victory.

This Youngstown State team appears considerably more dangerous offensively, particularly at quarterback, but Kentucky will once again have the advantage of playing in front of Big Blue Nation at Kroger Field.

The stadium will also have a different look Saturday. Kentucky has designated the opener as its BBN United Game and is asking fans to participate in a Kroger Field White Out.

Youngstown State is talented enough to prevent this from looking like an automatic blowout from the opening kick. Brungard may give Kentucky's defense some problems, particularly early, and the Penguins already have the benefit of playing one game.

But over four quarters, Kentucky's advantages should become increasingly apparent.

The Wildcats have more size, more speed and considerably more depth. Kentucky should be able to lean on Youngstown State at the line of scrimmage, while Stein gets Minchey comfortable with manageable throws and begins unveiling pieces of his new offense.

Don't be surprised if the Penguins put together a couple of scoring drives. Also don't be surprised if Kentucky pulls away once both teams start going deeper into their rotations.
